Electronic Travel Authorization
Starting January 8, 2025, U.S. citizens traveling to the United Kingdom for short visits, tourism, or business, including those just passing through UK airports, will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) if they do not have a UK visa or legal residency in the UK or the Republic of Ireland.
You usually need an ETA rather than a visa if you’re from Europe, the USA, Australia, Canada or certain other countries. Visit the UK ETA System to determine if you need an ETA or a Visa and to apply for an ETA. ETA is available for many non-UK citizens traveling to the UK. It is recommended that you apply a month in advance of your departure. ETA’s are valid for 2 years and multiple entries into the UK.
